We live in a time of great changes. It seems that history somehow went crazy, and so many paths were opened by science that it is not surprising that so much people start to question the true destiny of humanity. Neither is it surprising to see that there is such an interest in prophecies, as people seek there elements which may cast some light on this labyrinth. However, concerning the close future, there are all kinds of predictions and numerous interpretations for each of them, most seem to agree on the fact that the 21st century will be an extraordinary period of political and spiritual changes. Consequently, it's not impossible to imagine that the Catholic Church and the pope will play a very significant role in theses changes to come. From this point of view, several prophets predicted what would occur :

Prophecies of Saint Malachy

In 1595, was issued in Venice the Lignum Vitre, a book written by a Benedictine monk called Arnold Wion, devoted to the bishops of his order. Among them: Malachy O’Morgair, known as Saint Malachy (1094-1148), an Irish priest who fell in fright while approaching the gates of the Vatican during a pilgrimage, and had a vision of all the future popes of the Catholic Church. He asked his assistant to take note of this visions by associating to each pope a short Latin maxim describing each of them, a total of 112 ! (including Petrus Romanus, the last name of the list )

The release of the book provoked discussions to know who was the true author of the prophecies. It is difficult to guarantee the authenticity of these maxims, but since Bernard de Clairvaux, a famous religious head of the 12^th century and contemporary of Malachy wrote his biography, where he tells Malachy had the gift of prophecy, it’s likely that he is the true author.

There are different versions of what happened to them afterwards (in a version, Malachy gave them to the pope himself, and they were kept into the Vatican) but by associating retrospectively them to each pope from Celestine II, who was the pope in charge when Malachy came to Vatican, it’s astonishing to see that most of them get realized :

-" Of the hell in work " describes the pope Urban VI (1378-1389), whose true name was " Pregnani " (from Latin " praegnans " which means " in work"), and who was born in a district of Naples called Inferno ("the hell").

-" Of the small man " refers to the pope Pie III (1503). He was of the family of Piccolomini, which means " small men "

-" De Rure Albo ", which can be translated by: " of the Alban country", applies to the pope Adrian VI (1459 – 1523); Adrian, who reigned only a single year, was an English pope, born close to the Saint-Albans abbey, in the country of Alban.

-" The light in the sky " designates the pope Leon XIII (1810 –1903), who encouraged the bringing together with the French Republic and recommended an innovative social Catholicism. Its armorial bearings have a comet which crosses them.

-" The flower of the flowers " describes the pope Paul VI (1963-1978), whose armorial bearings show two silver lilies.

-" Of interlude of the moon " fits with John-Paul Ist (1978), which died of a sudden heart attack, and whose pontificate lasted approximately, 33 days, that is, a moon cycle.

-"  The apostolic traveler " indicated Pius VI (1774-1799), who because of the French revolution, made numerous travels across Europe.

-" Aquila Rapax " (the Abductor Eagle) refers to Pious VII (1800-1823), whose states has been taken by Napoleon, who uses an eagle as the imperial symbol.

-" De Balneis Etruriae " designates Gregory XIII (1830-1846) ; Gregory Mother House was indeed in Balnes in Etruria (Toscana)

-"  Crux de Cruce " (A cross above a cross) refers to Pious IX (1846-1878) who has been chased away of his pontifical states by Vitor-Emmanuel II of Savoy, whose arms of coat also bear a cross.

-" Religio depopulata " (destroyed religion) designates Benedict XV (1914-1922), who reigned during the first World War. 

John-Paul II is the 110the pope on the Malachy’s list. His maxim is " work of the sun ", which remains open to interpretation. But it is a noticeable fact that John-Paul II is born on May 18, 1920 in Cracow, during a quasi-total eclipse of the sun. Then comes the next to last pope, whose maxim is " the glory of olive tree ". As the branch of olive tree is the symbol of the Jews, it could be that this symbol indicates the cardinal John-Marie Lustiger, of its true name Aaron, who is Jewish by its origins, and has been adopted by a Catholic family where he converted at the age of 13. And finally, the last pope, called Peter the Roman, who has no maxim, but whose name is inserted in a small text: " At the time of the extreme persecution of the holy Roman church, Peter the Roman will sit, who will feed his ewes in the medium of many tribulations. Those passed, the city with the seven hills will be destroyed and the frightening judge will judge the people." This one will end the reign of the popes in Vatican.

This is why, if Malachy is right, it is more than likely that a terrible crisis will occur in the decades to come, because it’s difficult to imagine what could put an end to a papacy which successfully passed through all the wars and the worst storms of history, and which is one of the oldest institutions of the Western world. Or maybe that the function of pope will be perhaps dissolved into something else, possibly within the framework of the apparition of a new religion. The Vatican knows of course the existence of these prophecies, but they are not publicly discussed. It’s anyway illogical to imagine the Holy See commenting his close disappearance on such a basis... The prophecies of Saint-Malachy has nevertheless an astonishing echo in Nostradamus :

The letter addressed to Henry II, first, is surprisingly disconcerting compared to the 20th century. At first sight, this letter seems addressed to the king of the time, Henry II, who was then on the throne in 1558. But as one reads it, one realizes that it doesn’t refers to events of the 16^th century, but to events located in a far future, and that this letter, consequently, is not addressed to the king, but to the person who will manage one day to decipher the quatrains. Nostradamus would thus have written this letter in the middle of the 16th century while knowing it would be decoded only at the beginning of the third millenium by his spiritual heir! It is the same for the letter addressed to Caesar Nostredame: Nostradamus had indeed a child of the name of Caesar, who was his elder son, but he was a child when Nostradamus wrote the letter, which proves by its contents that it is as well as the " letter to Henry ", probably addressed to the same enigmatic character of the future, only being in the world able to understand the totality of prophecies of Nostradamus.

Without devoting itself to a complete analysis of the letter addressed to Henry II, one can quote a passage of it, to see how each one of it can be, sentence after sentence, reported to the 20th century history:

" And the daughter will be given by the preservation of the Christian church defeating its dominator to the pagan sect of the new infidels ; it will have two children, one of fidelity, the other of infidelity by the confirmation of the Catholic Church. And the other who to his great confusion and late repentance will want to ruin it, will be three areas by the extreme difference of the leagues, namely Romania, Germany, Spain, which will make various sects by military hand, forsaking the 50 and 52 degrees height ; and will make all homages to the remote religions of the areas of Europe and North of 48 degrees height, who will the first tremble by vain timidity, then the most western, southern and eastern will tremble, such will be their power, made by agreements and inseparable union coming from quarrelsome conquests. Of nature will be equal, but quite different by faith. After that, the sterile Lady of greater power than the second will be received by two people, the first stubborn who had power on all, the second and the third who will extend their forces towards the circuit of East of Europe (...) The New Babylon, miserable daughter increased by the abomination of the first holocaust, will hold not more than only seventy three years, seven months, after that will come from the stam the one who after having remained sterile such a long time, proceeding from the fiftieth degree, will renew all the Christian Church ".

" And the daughter will be given by the preservation of the Christian church defeating its dominator to the pagan sect of the new infidels " : 

Just before this sentence, Nostradamus described the rising of Napoleon Ist and Napoleon III. Consequently, " the daughter " can signify the revolutionary spirit, the republicanism and the laicism, which in spite of the restorations, won over Europe during the second half of the 19^th century. It can as well refer to socialism ; this doctrin indeed seeks the happiness of humanity, it can thus be considered as the " daughter " of Christian ideal, as it wants to put an end to oppression and preaches the sharing, even if it uses different methods than Christianity. However, the movement of separation of Church and State that made this ideology possible will lead to a paganism, that is to say a rejection of God and a worship of idols. The pagan sect of the new infidels is therefore the one which seems to be the continuation of the Christian ideal of sharing, but which actually refuses the law of God to establish his own : Communism, Fascism, and Nazism.

" it will have two children, one of fidelity, the other of infidelity by the confirmation of the Catholic Church " :

This movement of unbelievers will have " two children ", it means that it will split into two main branches, thus dividing the world: the first will be the Communism, which in spite of its rejection of the religion, will be faithful to an ideal of universal justice which makes it close to the teaching of Christ. The second is the Fascism, which on the contrary will firmly be opposed to any ideal of sharing and will exalt racist and nationalist values openly. The infidel child, Fascism, will have the support of the Church, who will become its ally in order to counter Communism (which actually was the political line of the Vatican; the temporal sovereignty of this State was recognized by Mussolini itself, as he is the one who signed the agreements of Latran with the Holy See, in 1922. The Roman catholic Church always regarded Communism as its natural enemy, in opposition to the fascistic systems he supported).

" And the other who to his great confusion and late repentance will want to ruin it, will be three areas by the extreme difference of the leagues, namely Romania, Germany, Spain, which will make various sects by military hand, forsaking the 50 and 52 degrees height ; and will make all homages to the remote religions of the areas of Europe "

The Fascism, born from the same movement of secularization, will then turn over against Communism, and will seek to control the world. Stalin, betrayed by Hitler, will join the Allies to fight it. The fascistic movement will be composed of three countries which will be its pillar ; Nostradamus enumerates them in the order of their chronological appearance: " Romanie ", the land of Rome, that is fascistic Italy. Germany, that is the Nazis, and finally Franco’s Spain. These countries formed a coalition trying to impose its power by the weapons. The " 50 and 52, degrees height " therefore indicates the latitude, knowing that it is at this latitude that is located the center of Germany and the area of the Ruhr, heart of the German industrial device. The symbol of the Nazis was the svatiskva, a religious symbol coming from India, that is, a country of the " remote religions to the areas of Europe.

" of 48 degrees height, who will the first tremble by vain timidity, then the most western, southern and eastern will tremble, such will be their power, made by agreements and inseparable union coming from quarrelsome conquests. Of nature will be equal, but quite different by faith. "

The 48 parallel passes by Munich, the city of the famous treaty where France and England bowed to Hitler. It is not abusive to talk of " vain timidity " about this, as it was a true defeatism ; Hitler told to its entourage that he was ready to withdraw at the least sign of resistance of the Western democracies. Progressively, as he advanced, all European countries fell, and there remained soon no resistance, except for England, which did not succumb. At this moment, everybody, West and East, trembled thinking that the Nazi flag may soon float over the whole world. The forces of Axis, although made up of countries with very different cultural traditions, will share however the same desire to control the world by the weapons.

" After that, the sterile Lady of greater power than the second will be received by two people, the first stubborn who had power on all, the second and the third who will extend their forces towards the circuit of East of Europe"

Communism will however be victorious, and will thus be implanted in East Germany, that is, the country who nearly invaded the whole world. The USSR will then control the Eastern part of Europe. The third can mean China, which will then become the third pole of the communist world.

" The New Babylon, miserable daughter increased by the abomination of the first holocaust, will hold not more than only seventy three years, seven months, after that will come from the stam the one who after having remained sterile such a long time, proceeding from the fiftieth degree, will renew all the Christian Church. " :

The USSR, a new Babylon which defies God, and who was successful thanks to the disorders caused by the First World War, will hold only seventy years and three months, that is the exact length of time separating the revolution of October 1917, when Communism was established in Russia and the election of Boris Eltsine in June 1991, which provoked the end of the USSR. At this moment, a new spiritual movement will arise in this country remained sterile such a long time and will come to renew all the Christian Church.

Now, concerning the papacy in the 20^th century, few quatrains were largely commentated ; for instance the astonishing 5 –92 :

After the see has been held seventeen years,
Five will change within the same accomplished time:
Then one will be elected at the same time,
One who will not be like the Romans.

Interpretation :

When Nostradamus speaks about the " seat ", it systematically indicates the Holy See. In the whole history of papacy, only one pontificate lasted 17 years, and it was the one of the pope Pious XI. It is safe to assume that this quatrain is about of our time.

The pope Pious XI died in 1939. After him, there were five other popes: Pious XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, and finally John-Paul Ist. John Paul Ist died in 1978; and by adding the duration of these five pontificates, we obtain a sum of 39 years (between 1939 and 1978), that is to say the date when the pontificate of Pious XI ended: " Five will change into such completed term ".

From there, it is easy to locate " the one elected in the same time " as being John-Paul II, who was indeed elected in 1978, since John-Paul 1st died only one month after becoming pope. " Which Romans will not be too in conformity " refers finally to the fact that John-Paul II has been the first non-Italian pope for 455 years, after Adrian VI, in 1523!

Now, if Nostradamus is a false prophet, one must acknowledge that the illusion is rather convincing. And if he’s not, it is necessary to raise up the question to know if it is possible to decipher the quatrains in order to anticipate the future. From this point of view, a first thing is very disconcerting; just as Malachy, who announced there would be no more than two popes before the complete disappearance of papacy, Nostradamus predicted as well a great deal of upheavals for the Catholic church, a logical thing since the whole world, according to Nostradamus, will know important changes in all possible ways at the beginning of the 21st century.

Now, if we indulge a look at the Centuries for clues about the destiny of papacy in the 21st century, there is this quatrain :

Shortly before the monarch is assassinated,
Castor and Pollux in the ship, bearded star:
The public treasure emptied by land and sea,
Pisa, Asti, Ferrara, Turin forbidden land.

And

There will appear towards the North
Not far from Cancer the bearded star:
Susa, Siena, Boeotia, Eretria,
The great one of Rome will die, the night over

Seem both to refer to the upcoming apparition of a comet, " star crinite ", having a mane, and " hairy star ", whose disappearance will announce the death of the pope and perhaps a great destruction related to the Holy See. Such an interpretation is reinforced by the " Pisa, Ast, Ferrare, Turin, ground forbidden. " and of " Will die of Rome large, the disappeared night ". The Italian grounds around Rome will become " prohibited then ". Another famous quatrain is also interpretable from the same point of view:

Roman Pontiff beware of approaching
the city that two rivers flow through,
near there your blood will come to spirt,
you and yours when the rose will flourish.

The pope IV, designated by St-Malachy as " the apostolic traveler ", died in Valence, that is, close to Lyon, France, which corresponds to the description of the city of the two rivers. But when Nostradamus speaks of the " rose ", he actually designates the Great Monarch, future prophet and spiritual head who will be able to decipher the quatrains, and to whom the two letters written by Nostradamus are addressed (another quatrain speaks about the " head of wisdom, which of present is the rose of the world"), the opening out of the rose meaning his appearance. And as Nostradamus clearly locates this appearance at the beginning of the new millenium, one can as imagine that the warning is addressed to John Paul II, or more likely to his successor. The city in question could then be Lyon as well as Paris, which is located between the Seine and the Marne, or even Iraq (Tiger and Euphrates) or Syria.

The core of the problem would then be to understand what is the true meaning of such a warning, since Nostradamus clearly insisted on the fact that everything he described " is written ", and that in spite of all our efforts, some events inevitably occur. It is in any case impossible to split the fate of the Church and the fate of the rest of the world, and one must thus, if the current interpreters of Nostradamus are right, expect to see all kinds of changes and revolutions to occur. Some of them will doubtlessly be the direct product of the huge projections of modern science, but some others could as well be of a spiritual nature. Who knows; perhaps that after a long silence, God will appear again to humanity....
